Understanding Exposure - for better photographs

As modern camera technology makes it possible for almost anyone to capture a nice photograph…

… it is also turning the camera into a mystery for newcomers to the game. When the advanced electronics of even the most “entry-level” camera is capable of doing almost all of the thinking and decision making for a new photographer, there is little incentive for learning how the camera works, how it is making the decisions that it does, and how it can be fooled by certain lighting conditions. This traps the photographer in a maze of frustration. Without a solid understanding of how the camera deals with the light striking its sensor, new photographers have no earthly idea how to modify or bypass the camera’s brain, when it starts misbehaving. And it will start misbehaving!

This video post is meant to be a step in the right direction. It may be challenging for the absolute beginner, but it is a challenge worth overcoming. Think of this video as a key with which you can unlock the mysteries of your camera, and take back control of the light that you are recording with every click of the shutter. Come to grips with the material presented here and you will have everything you need to understand exposure and unleash the awesome power of modern digital photography. Without an understanding of exposure, new photographers are unlikely to move very far towards their creative potential and most will find themselves destined for a point-and-click future.
