Getting Creative with Macro Compositing

I hope you week is going well!

In this blog post I am going to walk you through the process of basic photography compositing - from start to finish. I go through every step in detail in the video below, but the basics are as follows…

We start out by setting up the studio (or kitchen table, as the case may be) and getting some very cool “smoke” images.

It’s really just acrylic paint being squirted into a miniature fish tank, but it looks awesome!

Next we capture some high resolution shots of our subject, using the same lighting setup and same macro lens.

Then we take the images into Lightroom and Photoshop and, after adding a gradient background, we composite the shots. And this is what the end result looks like…

It takes a little patience and a few basic Photoshop skills, but it’s a pretty straightforward project.
