Exotic Optics


Macro photography is unique in a number of ways but one feature that makes it particularly exciting for me is the almost infinite variety of special optics that can be adapted for use at magnification. Macro lenses are, of course, purpose built for close-up imaging and, as you would expect, they run the gamut from  terrible to superb, with most falling somewhere in the middle. But what is even more interesting to me are the specialized lenses, usually designed for some specific purpose other than macro photography, that can be adapted for use as macro lenses. Some examples include optics designed for use as scanner lenses, close-up diopters, bellows lenses, enlarger lenses and a host of specialized industrial lenses. In each of these categories there are lenses that perform particularly well when adapted for macro. But there are a handful of lenses that really deserve to be placed in a special category all on their own because they set the standards by which other lenses or lens combinations are measured. These are the lenses I want to talk about this week and I call them Exotic Optics.

Exotic Optics is a somewhat arbitrary designation and you will see it used to describe lenses like Laowa’s probes, Nikon PC (Perspective Control) tilt/shift lenses, and Canon’s MPE-65 variable magnification lens, among others. But for the sake of this discussion I am going to define Exotic Optics to exclude these consumer-type lenses. The lenses I want to talk about are in a subgroup of optics that are relatively rare, typically very expensive, not designed or marketed for use on standard camera equipment, and were developed with a very specific use-case in mind. The one thing that all these lenses have in common is that they are highly sought after by macro photographers because of their extraordinary performance. These lenses are usually of a fixed focal length and typically, though not always, have a fixed magnification ratio. Many are designed to be used wide open, and perform best with a wide aperture. None of them come with a standard camera mount and some require complicated special adapter setups to use with a consumer camera.


Most of the lenses I will be talking about are “industrial lenses”, designed for use in a variety of industrial applications, from making prints in the motion picture industry, to scanning silicon wafers for quality control in computer chip fabrication. They are used in machine vision applications where the highest possible clarity and resolution are required. Because they are not made for consumer applications they frequently lack specialized coatings on the glass elements, and often have no external controls or markings. They are possibly the only lenses that are more intimidating for mere mortals to use than microscope objectives.




I must make a confession here… While I have made it my business to learn all I can about these rare and expensive lenses, I do not own any of them. The lenses I am going to talk about are on my wish list list and are even listed in the order that they appear on that list. Some of these lenses are not absurdly costly, but the less expensive exotics also seem to be the hardest ones to find on the used market. With almost no exception, these lenses must be sourced on the used market, or occasionally through an industrial surplus outlet. Virtually never would we find these lenses in a consumer retail outlet, and many of them have been out of production for decades. The selection of lenses I am going to talk about are all lenses that I have studied in detail and many of them have been carefully evaluated and written about on specialized websites like Closeuphotography.com (Robert O’tool), Photomacrography.net (Rik Littlefield), and Coin Imaging (various), and I know many individuals who own one or more of these Exotic Optics. You will notice that I have not included any of the excellent microscope objectives that could easily qualify for a spot on this list. That is mostly because we have talked about these lenses often and most of them are used for significantly higher magnification applications than these lenses. The optics I will discuss on Tuesday cover a range of magnifications from 1:4 up to 4X, though most are at or near 1:1. Key Characteristics to Look for

  1. Focal Length: A range between 60mm and 100mm is ideal for versatility in macro photography. The longer the focal length, the more distance you have from the subject.

  2. Magnification Ratio: All these lenses offer at least 1:1 magnification, crucial for true macro work.

  3. Autofocus vs. Manual: Many affordable lenses are manual, but autofocus can be a bonus if speed is important.

  4. Image Stabilization: Not all lenses have it, but it's a valuable feature for handheld macro photography.

Photographing Art

Greetings all!

What an interesting week this promises to be! I finally have my studio operational again, even though the  permanent lighting superstructure is still in the design process. I have been going round the bend not having a stable platform on which to do even the most basic low magnification imaging. But that is no longer the case and I have a perfectly serviceable rig in place. I will be busy this week, getting the new setup calibrated and a temporary lighting scaffold in place, but hopefully will be back taking pictures by the middle of the week.


This week we will be looking at an area of photography that is a change of pace for the channel, though there is considerable overlap between macro photography and this week’s topic. We will be talking about how to take good photographs of works of art. On Tuesday we will look at all the tips and tricks for making compelling images of two-dimensional art - paintings, drawings,  etchings and several other examples of flat, or mostly flat, artworks. I’ll be talking about the best cameras, lenses, and accessories for the task, as well as how to light your subjects for the best results. Later in the week we will look at the very different but equally fascinating challenge of photographing three-dimensional artworks, including sculptures of all kinds. This is also quite a bit more complicated and challenging than it may look at first glance as it very often involves not only accurate rendering of shape and form, but also meticulous attention to surface textures and finishes. Another Big Week

Before this week is over we will have launched the AWP Essentials Project, I will have completed my second interview with the amazing Lester Lefkowitz, and we will have done a total of FOUR live events! Yikes!


But before I talk about the Essentials  Project let me tell you what we are going to be doing for the Livestreams this week (I’m not going to tell you what I have planned for Lester - you will have to wait and see that for yourself in a couple of weeks!).

So, with all that out of the way, I want to tell you about t the new project I am launching this week - I think it is a big deal, but I will need our help to pull it off. Here is a summary of the project. AWP MacroEssentials Project

Purpose

The AWP MacroEssentials Project is a viewer-centric initiative developed in response to requests from numerous viewers of the Allan Walls Photography YouTube channel for a practical, accessible, curated content guide that will help newcomers to the channel find and enjoy the content that most accurately meets their individual needs. In a nutshell, the end product will consist of a limited series of short videos that introduce the viewer to a specific category of content in a linear and progressive format that can form the basis for more advanced study or exploration. The format will be that of a video playlist consisting of, in the initial set, a dozen short videos in which Allan will introduce the viewer to a specially curated playlist of video content, including both complete videos and sections of larger videos or livestream presentations, addressing a specific topic of interest to macro photographers. In each introductory video Allan will personally and briefly summarize the key points made in the playlist videos.

People

Allan has recorded more than 800 hours of video content, most as standard YouTube videos, but also including 250 hours of Livestream recordings. Given his steady and unrelenting production schedule, it is perhaps unsurprising that he does not have the time to review all of this material by himself. It is also reasonable to surmise that he is not the best person to objectively review this content in search of the best material. But you are! To come up with the best possible selection of content that will be serve the purpose outlined above, Allan has assembled a team of volunteers who are familiar with his back catalog and motivated to be part of a project designed to serve the larger community of up and coming macro photography enthusiasts. To this end, Allan has asked two very special people, both long term supporters of the channel, to oversee the project. He is proud to introduce Susan Seaford and Amy Ferman as Co-Directors of this important project. Susan and Amy are assembling a team of volunteers, whose names will be released when the selection is complete.

Process

When the Volunteer list has been finalized, the Directors will assign to each volunteer a carefully selected area of focus. In the context of this project, an area of focus will consist of those core materials considered essential to mastery of a specific discipline within macro photography. One such area of focus might be “Focus Stacking”, and the Volunteer(s) assigned to this topic would seek out the best content from the AWP back catalog that addresses this area. The Volunteer(s) working on this area of focus would identify and rank the content blocks that they consider to be most important for a viewer trying to develop skills in that area. The Volunteer(s) may select entire videos or selections from within a larger piece of content, and may even include written content published on the AWP website or the AWP Patreon Page. The Volunteer(s), with input and guidance from the Directors, would also rank the content/content segments in a recommended viewing order. Each area of focus may contain as many content blocks as the Volunteer(s) and Director feel is appropriate, while avoiding unhelpful repetition or redundancy. The Volunteer(s) will be under no time constraints, their results being complete when they so state.

Product

The final product of this project will consist of a YouTube Playlist titled - AWP Macro Essentials (or something similar) and it will be an “on-ramp” for anyone looking to jumpstart their learning experience in macro photography. The playlist will be made up of around a dozen short videos, each addressing a key topic in macro photography. For example, the first video might be titled “AWP Macro Essentials #1 - Basic Macro Equipment” and it will be the first video in a new playlist titled “Basic Macro Equipment”. In each video Allan will briefly introduce the overall topic then talk (again, briefly) about the key points that will be covered in each of the linked videos in the playlist. The links to the videos (as well as links to other content we think is important, like articles, checklists, diagrams, or tables from Allan’s website) will be embedded in the video and listed in the program description. This way, the viewers can jump from content block to content block to find exactly what they need. In some cases the links will direct the viewer to an entire video, while others will direct them to a section of a video or livestream or some other kind of content. At least for now, these links will only be to Allan’s own content, though in the future we may add links to other materials by other teachers. This is also going to be an ongoing project with new videos being added to playlists as other, older ones are removed. Allan will continue to draw on the experience of you, the audience, to determine when a video, or section of a video, should be removed or added to a playlist. Allan will not curate these playlists without input from you - that would defeat the point of the project!

Innovation & Invention in Macro Photography

I am immensely grateful to Claus and to Bud for all the work that they put into the discussions featured in this episode. I wanted to give you a little of my own perspective on both of these presentations and how they came to be on the agenda this weekend.

 

Claus Giloi is relatively new to macro photography and our paths first crossed when he joined my Patreon group and inquired about getting some one-on-one instruction. Whenever I take on a new student, the first thing I always do is spend an hour looking at the photographer's recent work and talking to them about their goals, interests, and the challenges that prompted them to ask for help. I came away from our first session wondering what I could possibly do to help this artist achieve his goals. I'm still wondering!

When I saw the work that Claus was doing with a field rig conceived and designed to test the hypothesis that many of the difficulties of handheld stacking could be overcome using ultra-high speed captures and high-intensity continuous light, I knew he was onto something important. I also knew that you would want to see how it was done. What I didn't know was whether Claus would be willing to give us a glimpse behind the curtain. I got my answer on Saturday!

In retrospect, we could have easily filled the entire Pzoom discussing this technique, and exploring all the possibilities it raises. But that would have to wait for another opportunity as it was time to shift focus from the field to the studio and our second presenter of the morning.

I have known Bud Perrott since the earliest days of this channel. I have worked with him in his studio and he has worked with me in mine. Bud is a very talented and experienced photographer and is widely recognized as one of our most innovative and creative users of image editing tools like Lightroom and Photoshop. But when we first met he was just beginning his exploration of extreme macro photography.

Bud is one of those photographers who has never met a piece of equipment or an imaging technique that he couldn't come up with a way to improve (with the possible exception of a certain 95mm Printing Nikkor - more on that later). Now, this is not an entirely unfamiliar characteristic of macro photographers, but Bud has taken it to a whole new level.

The images Bud is capturing with his custom-built vertical platform, unique rim lighting technique, and exotic Printing Nikkor speak for themselves, but the numerous and complex modifications to his vertical shooting platform do require a little explanation. And that is how we spent the second hour of Saturday's Pzoom meeting.

Both of our presenters did an extraordinary job of summarizing the key elements of their equipment setups and workflows, and both did so with an infectious enthusiasm that only added to the sense that we were experiencing something significant in the growth and development of our macro photography community.

One Cup of Coffee...

… can totally ruin your week, if it lands in just the wrong place. More about this later.

I hope each and every one of you had a delightful weekend. It was lovely in central Illinois, but hopefully it was not the last lovely weekend of the year. Picnic on the 7th of September! I was very busy, as usual, but did take an hour  or two to go and explore the local botanical gardens, the Luthy Gardens, named most likely for a famous Peorian named “Gardens”. It was not the most expansive garden that I have spent time it, but it is beautifully kept and the layout has been planned with great care. I spoke briefly with the groundskeeper, while she was ejecting me from the premises, as it happened - but that was because it was quitting time and   yours truly was holding up the patient employee’s departure.

It was a short visit and flew by fast, and as I being escorted off city property, I was reminded of the cardinal lesson that I teach all my field macro students - you cannot do your best work without slowing down - slowing way down. Running to get to the park, arriving shortly before closing, and trying to see everything in the time I had there, these all conspired with the dozen things I had on my mind to make slowing down virtually impossible. And unfortunately, my pictures suffered as a result. Why is that, and what does a “distracted” photograph look like? Well I would show you, but that is the whole point. When I become rushed and distracted I don’t see the shots, so I can’t capture them. Simple as that.


This is not something I am conscious of most of the time, it is something I become aware of as I look through my shots from the day. Interestingly, there are usually more of them than there would have been from a successful trip. They also lack imagination. They are perfectly acceptable from a technical standpoint (or some of them are!), but they tend to be clinical, ordinary, and unimaginative. It is not unusual for me to see the shot I should have taken, when it is too late to do anything about it.



If you are new to closeup photography in the field you may be wondering what the take-home message is from this observation - should I have stayed home and found something constructive to do? Gone somewhere else to take my pictures? No - I did exactly what I needed to do - I went to the place I wanted to visit and did the best I could with the tools I had on hand. Yes - it would almost certainly have been a more fruitful trip if I could have slowly myself down, or planned to go earlier in the day, but that is not the point I want to make. Macro photography is not about the pictures. Good pictures are a welcome bonus but they are not the prize . Getting out of the house for little while on a stunning Sunday afternoon, that is the prize. This is important, because only when I am truly engaged with the macro photography process do my overdue projects, unpaid bills, and 15,000 unread emails begin to fade into the background hum of the city outside the fences of the gardens.  And as these matters are temporarily set aside, space opens up in the parts of my mind that have the capacity to see and appreciate beauty. When the everyday world around me recedes far enough to seem no longer relevant, when I am moving slowly and actively soaking up all that the day has to offer, when the last thing on my mind is getting a good photograph, that is when I can see the shots. They come to me, I don’t go to them. I just have to be ready to see them and get out of my own way while I take the picture.

I have heard people refer to this as a “state of flow”, which sounds reasonable enough. I think of to as a kind of meditation, but don’t know if this is accurate - I certainly lack the discipline to  sit in silence to contemplate my breath for more than 30 seconds. But I can be out aimlessly strolling through nature, with no concept of time, for an entire day. It there is something magical in this weird hobby of ours, it is here, in the process that it is to be found. And I hope that you do.


And what does that have to do with this week’s livestreams? Well, absolutely nothing, as it happens - it was just on my mind and I wanted to tell you about it.

So, what am I going to be talking about this week? As of midnight last night I was planning on talking to you about the most recent redesign of my macro platform, a platform that I am going to be building with you over the coming weeks. I had already done quite a lot of preparation and was looking forward to a lively conversation with lots of questions and helpful feedback, but, as things do, over the course of just a few hours all that changed. Isn’t it strange the way things change with absolutely no regard for our carefully made plans? Two things happened in quick succession and one of them needs to talked about. The first thing was that I got a call from my friend and fellow macro photographer, Lester “just call me Lester” Lefkowitz. Lester was calling to tell me his books were back in stock after a fresh print run and he was ready to meet with me for his interview. A quick look at the schedule and  it was all arranged. I will be be interviewing my second iconic macro photographer of the month on Tuesday, as in, this Tuesday, or today for some readers.


In this first interview I am going to find out a little bit about this remarkable and charming young man’s long and storied career as a professional photographer. I already know some of it, but there is much more. I think he has photographed stuff for every major brand on planet Earth, at one time or another - and just wait until you see the pictures! We will then work out through the first volume of his book and talk about what we find. We have a second interview planed for the fall - for volume 2. So, that was welcome distraction number one, the one that shouldn’t cause any change in my programming this week. Oh, and by the way, I will not be releasing the final interview until a little later - this at the perfectly reasonable request of Mr Lefkowitz. But, if you have been patiently waiting for his fantastic books to be available once more, your wait is over. No sooner will I be finished talking to Lester and it will be time to fire up “Sweet Young Thang” in preparation for Livestream numero uno, Macro Talk. Now the plan was that I would use the entire program to talk about the new macro platform that is being planned, and I will spend a good chunk of our time talking about this very, but this is where the second unplanned event of Monday intervenes. In a moment of inattention, sitting at my desk, suddenly and without provocation, some combination of upper extremity neurons fired in a manner and sequence that neither the neurons, nor their owner, could claim any experience of. The result was therefore a poorly coordinated and completely unexpected flailing of the left arm at the shoulder. Troubling enough in isolation, this event coincided with a perfectly mundane occurrence taking place a little more than two feet away. There could be found the blameless left hand, authoritatively grasping a large thermally insulated vessel filled wit a mixture of freshly brewed coffee, and a sugary, cream-like concoction designed to make the coffee both delicious and extremely sticky, a fact that will soon assume great importance in this narrative.


If you don’t have at least two boxes of this stuff ready to go, do not drink coffee in the same room as you laptop. And a can of compressed air.



The hand, unprepared for the sudden departure from routine, swung laterally, totally at the mercy of the shoulder muscles. The coffee and the vessel holding it did not, and instead responded obediently to the insistent downward tug of gravity. The only thing that mercifully prevented the cup and beverage from slamming into the painted concrete floor and spilling everywhere was my perfectly positioned MacBook Pro, M1 Max computer, the most expensive piece of computing equipment I have ever owned, that  in a blizzard of irony had been completely paid for and ended its period of warrantee coverage on the same day, one week prior. And now it was soaked over every inch of it’s case ad screen with some 16 ounces of hot, sweet breakfast beverage.

In the minutes and hours that followed, my years* of training on the rapid response “Aisle Cleanup Unit” of the local Walmart Super Center at which I was briefly employed kicked in to pull off one of the most remarkable saves in the history of computing**. I am going to take a few minutes to explain and demonstrate the methods I deployed that resulted in a fully functional and spotlessly clean Mac laptop. If you have a laptop and drink beverages anywhere near it, you need to pay attention during this part of the stream. It could pull your fat out of the fire, like it did mine. With that done I will allow a few minutes for the applause to  drop to a steady thunderous roar before forging ahead with the evening’s program.

Which is, of course,  introducing you to the  new macro platform concept that I have been working on for some time. This will also give me an opportunity to introduce a new a new and important partner to the Allan Walls Photography channel. Planning Ahead

Studio starting to look a lot better!

Summer is half over andI have no idea where the first half went - but I have a feeling the second half is not going to go by any slower. So this probably the perfect time to start thinking about the rapidly approaching “off-season” for insect photography. If you, like me, want to plan for a productive winter in the studio, the time to do so is now. For the first time in many years I have had to come to grips with the reality of an honest to goodness winter season - and I am not talking about the kind of winter that I am used to - the kind that consists of a week or two of temperatures in the mid-fifties. In just a few more weeks I will be faced with some of the harshest winter weather that the North American continent can produce. The Midwest is well known for its long, cold, wet ,and windy winters, with heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures being absolute certainties.


Every year, in the early fall, I will devote a little time to talk about the changing seasons but it has always been with a sort of academic detachment - like I was describing the conditions one might expect to encounter during a visit to one of Jupiter’s smaller moons. This year I feel a slightly greater sense of urgency and have decided to tackle this question both earlier and more thoroughly than I have in the past. And with this in mind our preparations for the coming winter kick off this week with a two part livestream titled “Planning Ahead”.


In  Part I, on Tuesday July 23rd, I am going to lay the ground work for a series of more detailed and specific discussions that will deal with exactly how we can get the most out of the coming winter. In this first session I will talking mostly about the things we can do to  extend the insect photography season, though later on I will  be getting into several other macro disciplines that also require some careful planning. The July Competition

I just wanted to give you a quick update on the move and, while I’m in the neighborhood give you the results from the June competition (“Abstract”) and announce the theme and rules for this month’s  competition. Let me begin with the last point - this month your image would be described “It came from a Grocery Store”. Note that I don’t say which grocery store or when it was acquired or why you got it, simply that the macro photograph(s) that you submit are of an object, shot at 1:2 or greater magnification, that came from a grocery store.

The Rules

One rule that I planned to enforce this month and announced on my website was about former competition winners being allowed to submit only a  single image from this month going forward. But I messed up and did not change the wording in the rules on the competition page, so  cannot in all fairness enforce a rule that was posted properly - but it is now, or soon will be - former winners and ties get only one entry per month. It is the same for our multiple winners. Everyone else gets two entries - and no one gets 3, 4 ,or 5 entries, ever. So this month you will not be punished for submitting two entries, but in consideration of those winners who did follow the new rule, we will only accept your first submission - which sounds pretty reasonable to me. Something else I should explain is why this month there is no video. I have no equipment to record a video, not connection to upload it over, and no time to make the thing anyway. So this is a written version, and a short written version at that. And that leads me to the first point - an update on my move.

Moving one’s home, business, and studio is every bit as much fun as a vigorous frontal sinus lavage, and possibly more. Moving anytime is terrible, but moving in the heat of an Alabama July is just the worst and at the time of this writing I had not actually started the actual moving part yet! I was still packing. The move started the day after I wrote this and it took all of two days to complete - that is just the driving part. So for the week before and the week after this move I have remained hot and tired and simply have not been able to stop mislabeling boxes long enough to make  a video, let alone one that you might enjoy watching. So I decided to do the competition announcement this way, just this once. And it is not really me that did the heavy lifting to judge your entries! That accolade goes to next month’s guest Judge and all around good fellow, Harold Hall, who anticipated the tight spot this move would put me in and contacted me to offer his expert judging services to help me out in my time of need. And I accepted his offer. So this is a competition scored independently by both Harold and myself - allowing me to fulfill my promise to have two judges for future competitions. He did a spectacular job (because I agreed with his choices, in most part) and I should add that I am honored to have such a seasoned expert on the panel. As is my practice, I shared my scoring strategy with the guest judge, who scored each image using the same criteria. Then I fed his scores and mine into a Supercomputer  which struggled for less than four hours before tabulating the results into what you are about to read. As always the Honorable Mentions are not presented in any particular order, but the top ten most certainly are (in reverse order).

But before we jump into the results, a word on the topic.


ABSTRACT - relating to or denoting art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but rather seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, colors, and textures


We had one DQ (5-images) and several entries that I had a hard time thinking of as abstract images. I was definitely looking for images that implied meaning using shapes colors, and textures. When I look at an abstract artwork, especially a photograph, and I recognize what I am looking at, I find that knowledge to be quite distracting. When I make an abstract picture I take pains to make sure you see the colors, features, patterns first. If you recognize the subject, I have not done what I was trying to do.With a successful abstract, the viewers eyes  are locked into the shapes, the colors, the reflections, shadows, and the textures. The viewer is encouraged to look beyond the subject to see the beauty in the components that make up the image. So with all that in mind, here are the results from the June competition as judged by Harold Hall and I:

Getting Settled - and an After Stack reminder

Absolutely not. The move is progressing, and I made quite a bit of progress today, but I am not even close to having the studio ready to go. This is the state of the studio as late as yesterday...

 ... and this is AFTER 4 days of working on it. This going to be a major task and it is going to take quite a few more 12-hour days to get the basics in place. I hope you can bear with me a little while longer and I hope to have enough done by Tuesday to get next week off to a good start with an update livestream.

I have only been out to explore the area briefly and even took a couple of pictures this afternoon. These are from a park very near the house.

The Agony of Moving

Did I say “Agony”? Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but moving has to be one of my least favorite things to do, ever. Moving into a similar sized space, or a little larger, has its benefits. With more room can get more organized, for example. But I am moving into a smaller space, and that is a very different matter. It requires that I not move everything, which is the same as having to choose which chunks of my life am I prepared to amputate so that the rest will fit. That is what I am doing this week, so that when the trucks arrive in a couple of days I will have everything I need separated from everything I will not have room for. And this is the part I have the hardest time with. It is when I discover the sentimental value of things I have been dragging around for decades. You can’t really feel that until you have to leave it behind.

But I should be looking on the bright side, shouldn’t I? This move will be a chance to renew and revitalise the channel, to take advantage new surroundings and new people to provide a rich source of content, and to become more efficient with my insect photography because bug season is getting ready to shrink dramatically (fewer outings, but a renewed sense of urgency to get results). Change is always hard, and a big change like this will be harder than most, but it is the right move at the right time, so it will all work out. Please hang in there with me while I get the hardest part, the physical move, completed. I am not certain how long it will take me to rebuild my photography studio, the video set, and my back office, but I will be working like a madman to get everything set up and operational so that I can get myself back into a production routine as quickly as possible. I appreciate your understanding!

1) Anything you found, or could have found, at a grocery store (in the US sense of the word - but supermarket would work as well) which is where you go to buy stuff like food and the everyday consumables of life. An eggplant, a magazine, or a roll of sticky tape are all good examples of the things you could find there. A Boeing 767, a collapsible yurt, and a chunk of moon rock are not.

2) Your picture needs to be a MACRO photograph, which I am defining as 1:2 or greater (half life size. This is more magnification that I have used previously so be aware of the change).

3) You may submit one or two entries, unless you have won the AWP competition in the past. Former winners (first place and ties) may only submit one image to this competition in July.

4) The Official Guest Judge for July is Mr. Harold Hall, a seasoned and experienced photography judge and judge educator. Your images will be in good hands!

When a bad shot becomes a happy accident - artifact or mist?

I have to get back to packing, but I am planning to take some time this evening to publish the results of the July competition - Please be patient just a little longer!

As soon as I land in my new place and find out where the wall sockets are, I will let you know and start getting everything back on track. There will be no livestream on Thursday of this week and Tuesday of next, but I may be able to get one out on Thursday - a week from Tomorrow. I am going to have to cancel this week’s planned Pzoom and I will otherwise keep the schedule as it has been for the last couple of years - so the next Pzoom will be on July 20th which will also be the next Tangent, with Larry Strunk. The next After-Stack will be next weekend, on Saturday the 13th of July, with Bud Perrott.

Opportunity

So, the theme for this week’s brace of livestreams is “Opportunity”.

I came up with this idea over the weekend, when I was trying to juggle an overly optimistic production schedule with my yearning to be outside in the sun and sea breeze with a camera in hand. I kept trying different ways to organize the schedule that would leave a gap for some “shutter time” - not to be confused with the also pleasurable going out to shoot stills or video for work. B+No, all I wanted was time to walk around outside, preferably in an unfamiliar corner, to see what I might find. But I kept coming up with the same bottom line - there was no free time that would give me the opportunity to get outside.

But it was that thought that stuck with me, and as I worked through the day’s fixed obligations, a morning Pzoom meeting followed by, what turned out to be, an incredibly helpful Tangent show - something about waiting for “Opportunity” to “give me” the time to do what I wanted to do. Who is this “Opportunity” and why is my day at the mercy of his or her temperament in judging whether or not I should be allowed to go outside. It struck me that I actually spend quite a lot of my time patiently waiting for “Opportunity” to give me permission to take care of myself.

What if “Opportunity” was less like a demanding taskmaster and a little more like a useful tool - something I could take down from the shelf when I needed to, and use in the way that benefits me and, by extension, the people who find something of value in my work? In other words, why couldn’t I take opportunity instead of waiting for it to be given, and if it wasn’t close by, why couldn’t I just make some of my own?

And that is what I want to talk about this week… how less than 60 minute, taken selfishly from my weekend schedule turned out, the benefits it bestowed and how that hour impacted the remainder of the weekend. Understand that I have been wanting to get out into the swamps to search for the ridiculously hard to find (around here, at least) - Sesbania herbacea, AKA, swamp Sesbania, hemp Sesbania, coffeeweed, and many others. It is a wild legume in the same family as the pea, Fabaceae, and it is native to the southern and southwestern US. One of its most recognizable features is its foliage, long stems with paired lance-shaped opposing leaflets, which is pretty unmistakable and shown here. My interest in this plant is actually more of a fascination with a tiny species of beetle, a member of the Curculionidae, that is born, lives, and dies in and around this species, and only this species of shrub.

Eudigogus pulcher - “The Most Beautiful”

I am talking about the breathtakingly gorgeous Sesbania clown weevil, and insect that has become a regular part of my summer since moving down here. As the likelihood of my leaving this area in the not too distant future increases, the thought of leaving behind this, and a few other species is a source of some sadness. Eudiagogus puncher, whose scientific name was taken from the Latin could be literally translated as “the most beautiful” could not have been given a more apt moniker. It is, up close, and personal stunning creature to behold. With its gentle rounded curves, floppy, drooping antennae and large clumsy looking weevil-feet already in place, all it needed was some eye-catching ornamentation. And this it has in abundance!

The clown weevil is, like many beetles  in the Curculionidae, covered in scales. The majority of them a re small oval and almost translucent, but appear black because of the dark layer of chitin to which the scales are fixed. But covering the beetle from head to tail and even extending down the appendages, is a regular reticulated  series of broad bands of glittering, multicolored gemstone-like scales that are difficult to describe adequately. When the insects emerge from the soil where they have lived as larvae for most of their lives, and first climb the stem of the plant that is to be their home, the scales are predominantly red with a scattering of orange, yellow, green and blue scales. But as they age, the colors become more variegated with the reds diminishing markedly and the blues and greens becoming more dominant. But to the naked eye, these unassuming little beasts are drab, dark beetles of only a few millimeters in length, probably not earning them a second glance. When the sun catches them from just the right angle, though, they sparkle like the precious gem they are. I could go on but will spare you - a picture will do a better job than I could. Looking at the scales under magnification they take on the character of some exotic kind of opal, with shimmering internal facets underlying a smooth translucent surface. The color is not a result of pigment within the scales, but instead a manifestation of refraction of the light bouncing off the hundreds of tiny photonic discs that make up the internal structure of the scale.

One interesting observation I made when first introduced to this species was that the weevils completely lose their color when damp, becoming uniform black even under high power magnification. Dying the weevil will have little effect until most of the water has evaporated, at which time the scales begin to light up, one at a time, in a most remarkable display of color. It looks exactly as if the animal was covered in thousands of microscopic LEDs in every color pf the rainbow, that are being switched to full power, one by one. This is something that you should not miss witnessing for yourself. If you live in a region known to be home to this plant, you should find it and then narrow your search to plants with leaves that are covered in small round holes - find the holes and you have found the weevils, but your task is not done. Catching them is a challenge. They are experts at hiding themselves. But they have an Achille’s heel, that by coincidence is also  part of the foot. When they see us coming they immediately put the plant stem between them and us. This maneuver keeps them almost completely out of sight, but for their big furry feet which can be spotted easily with practice, gripping the opposite side of the stem. The only other times I have been able to find them is as they sleep, when they can be found inside the leaves of the Sesbania, which close at sunset to leave a convenient sleeping place for the weevils, and when they mate. And they mate A LOT. It is not uncommon to find a row of three or four interlocked weevils, with the most recent participant piling onto the back of the rearmost, and probably confused of the frustrated suitors. Other than eating Sesbania, this frenzied coupling appears to be their sole waking activity.

You have to watch the stream to know what this ugly thin is!

And that is why I wanted some time off during the sunny part of the day on Saturday. I needed to find a new habitat in which to locate these insects. The only place I had ever seen them was in a single large Sesbania plant, the size of a small tree, located on a bus highway half an hour north of my home and that is where I planed to start my search.

But he and I take some pretty different approaches to the same problem and it makes for some interesting discussion.

A word to the wise… if you are thinking of adding a copy of Lester lefkowitz’s “Closeup and Macro Photography” to your library (which is a very good idea because it is a very good book), then you might want to act fast. Since first mentioning that I was reading these two volumes and that I was as impressed as could be, they have been disappearing from Amazon’s shelves at a steady rate. I am into the second volume and my enthusiasm grows with every chapter, so in the run up to my conversations with Lester I will probably talk more and more about what I am seeing and the remaining stock will continue to dwindle. Lester printed a very limited run of these volumes and  I doubt that what Amazon still has will cover the demand - just saying.
